The district spans 1,772 square kilometers with the provincial capital Lahore at its center, encompassing ten administrative subdivisions called tehsils along the Ravi River.
Established in 1847 during British rule, the district originally contained three tehsils before Kasur and Chunian separated into independent districts in 1976.
The population primarily speaks Punjabi and Urdu, with Islam practiced by 95 percent of residents and Christianity forming the second largest religious group.
The district maintains a literacy rate of 79 percent, with educational institutions spread across urban and suburban areas serving its population of nearly 13 million.
In 2024, the Punjab Government restructured the district by creating five additional tehsils: Wagah, Ravi, Nishtar, Iqbal Town, and Saddar.
