Lahore Zoo, Zoo in Lahore, Pakistan
Lahore Zoo is a zoological garden next to Lawrence Garden that houses more than one thousand three hundred animals from over one hundred thirty species across ten hectares (25 acres). The enclosures spread between old trees and wide paths that allow visitors to explore different sections.
The garden began in 1872 as a small aviary under the municipal administration of Lahore and ranks as the third oldest zoo in the world after the facilities in Vienna and London. Over the decades the grounds expanded with new enclosures and animal species from different continents.
The name recalls the British colonial period when Lahore was under the administration of the East India Company. Families from across the city visit on weekends to walk between the enclosures and observe the animals.
The facility opens every day from nine in the morning until sunset and requires an entry fee of forty rupees for adults and twenty for children. It is best to visit early in the morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler and the animals more active.
More than one thousand two hundred eighty trees from seventy-one different species grow on the grounds and create shaded areas for visitors and natural environments for the animals. Some of the oldest specimens date back to the founding period in the nineteenth century.
