Umarkot Fort

Umarkot Fort is a fortification in the Thar Desert with thick stone walls, round watchtowers, and several gates arranged as a defensive system. The structure preserves its original architectural elements and offers views across the surrounding desert landscape.

The fort became the site of a major moment when Emperor Akbar was born here in 1542 while his father Humayun sought shelter from Rana Prasad. This event connected it to the Mughal rise to power in the region.

The fort connects to local folklore through the story of Marvi, a young woman from the region who resisted a ruler's advances during captivity. This tale remains part of how people here understand their past and identity.

The fort is easily reached on foot and the ramparts provide access to viewpoints across the desert landscape. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are more comfortable.

The fort changed hands repeatedly from Hindu Rajputs through Mughals and Persians to Afghans and British rulers. This frequent shift in control reflects the region's turbulent history.
