Umerkot, Regional capital in Sindh Province, Pakistan
Umerkot is a city in Umerkot District of Sindh Province, Pakistan, that spreads across a desert landscape in the southeast near the Indian border. Streets run through dusty neighborhoods with low buildings, while religious sites and bazaars scatter across the residential areas.
The Mughal emperor was born here in 1542 when his father fled to the fort and found shelter from rival powers. The town grew around this fort and became a regional administrative center over the centuries.
The 15th-century fort stands in the town center and draws visitors who come to see its thick walls and tall gates. The markets nearby sell hand-woven textiles and regional crafts that show the skill of local artisans.
Visitors find hotels and guesthouses near the main roads where rooms can be booked for overnight stays. Summer heat can be intense, so visiting during the cooler months from October to March offers more comfort.
The region around the town is the only one in Pakistan where Hindus form the majority of the population. This particular religious background shapes daily life and explains why temples appear more often here than in other Pakistani towns.
