Pacco Qillo, Military fort in Hyderabad, Pakistan
Pacco Qillo is a fort built on a low hillock in Hyderabad, Pakistan, with thick stone walls and several entry points. The compound is divided into sections that once served as defensive positions, living quarters, and administrative spaces.
The fort was built in the 18th century to control a strategic high point above the surrounding region. Shortly after its completion, Hyderabad was declared a regional capital, and the fort became the center around which the new city grew.
The walls of the fort still carry remains of prayer spaces and living quarters from the Talpur period in Sindh. Visitors who walk through can see how religious and domestic life were arranged side by side within the same compound.
The fort sits in the center of Hyderabad and can be reached on foot from the surrounding streets, though the path up the hillock is steep and uneven in places. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, as some sections of the grounds have crumbling stone underfoot.
Although the fort was designed purely for defense, the first neighborhoods of Hyderabad grew directly against its walls as merchants and residents settled nearby. A military structure ended up becoming the founding point of an entire city.
