Grand Jamia Mosque, Karachi, Religious complex in Karachi, Pakistan
The Grand Jamia Mosque is a religious complex in Karachi, Pakistan, that spans several buildings and an open courtyard. A central dome is surrounded by twenty smaller domes, while four minarets rise above and define the skyline.
Construction was completed in 2014 under the design of Nair Ali Dada & Associates, who offered a contemporary interpretation of traditional mosque forms. The completion marked a turning point in religious architecture in the country and drew international attention.
The design follows classical mosque architecture while incorporating local craftsmanship from Pakistan, visible in the handmade tilework and metalwork throughout the complex. Persian chandeliers hang in the prayer hall, casting soft light during worship.
The building can hold a large number of worshippers in the main hall and courtyard, with separate areas designated for women. A school and an art gallery are also part of the grounds, extending the offerings beyond the prayer space.
Millions of tiles from Multan cover the outer walls and were laid individually by craftsmen, taking years to complete. The tilework follows geometric patterns that shift in appearance under different light conditions throughout the day.
