Mazar-e-Quaid, Mausoleum in Jinnah, Karachi, Pakistan
The Mazar-e-Quaid is a marble mausoleum in Jinnah, Karachi, dedicated to Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The structure rises from an elevated platform and displays four slender corner towers alongside a central dome above the burial chamber.
The tomb was conceived after the death of Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1948 and took more than two decades of planning before completion in 1970. Architect Yahya Merchant designed the monument to echo earlier Islamic ruling dynasties.
The building honors the founder of the nation and draws visitors from across the country who come to pay their respects in quiet reflection. Its design echoes the architectural language of Islam, expressed through calligraphy and stonework that connect the site to regional traditions.
Access to the grounds passes through checkpoints where bags and items are inspected before entry. Visitors must remove their footwear before stepping into the inner hall housing the tomb.
The design follows the principles of traditional Mughal gardens, arranging fountains and green spaces in symmetrical patterns around the central platform. This layout connects the monument to a design tradition stretching back centuries.
