High Gate in Olsztyn

The High Gate is a Gothic fortification with a square foundation connected to preserved sections of medieval walls that stretch nearby. The structure rises in distinct levels and displays typical medieval construction techniques that reveal how city defenses were once organized.

The gate was built in the 14th century as part of the city's defense system and played a key role in protecting medieval Olsztyn. Over the following centuries it changed functions several times before being repurposed for civilian uses.

The High Gate takes its name from its height and functions today as a landmark that connects visitors directly to the medieval period of Olsztyn. The surrounding walls and proximity to St Jacob's Church reveal how this structure once anchored the life of the community.

The gate sits in the northeast section of the Old Town and is easy to reach on foot, particularly if you approach from St Jacob's Church nearby. Plan some time to explore the surrounding wall sections and to view the interior spaces of the structure itself.

Of the three original gates that once protected the medieval city, this is the sole survivor standing today. Inside remains an authentic wooden portcullis that demonstrates the defensive mechanisms used by the medieval inhabitants.
