Gmina Opatówek, Administrative district in Kalisz County, Poland
Gmina Opatówek is an urban-rural municipality in Kalisz County, central Poland, made up of the town of Opatówek and around 26 villages. The territory alternates between built-up areas and open farmland, with most settlements sitting along flat river valleys.
The area came under the control of the Archbishops of Gniezno in the 13th century and was granted town rights before 1331. This connection to one of Poland's most powerful church institutions gave the settlement a lasting role as a local center.
The Industrial Museum in Opatówek holds a collection of old Polish pianos made in the region, which visitors can see up close. This part of the exhibit gives a tangible sense of how local craftsmanship shaped everyday life here.
Opatówek sits right next to Kalisz and is easy to reach from there by train or road. Those wanting to explore the smaller villages in the municipality will find it more convenient to travel by car, as connections between them are limited.
The municipality contains two protected river valleys where over 700 plant species grow alongside water birds. What looks like ordinary flat countryside from the road turns out to shelter a surprisingly rich range of wildlife.
