Zawoja, Mountain village in Lesser Poland Voivodeship, Poland
Zawoja is a mountain village in Lesser Poland Voivodeship that stretches 18 kilometers (11 miles) through a valley at the foot of Babia Góra. The settlement follows the Skawica River and divides into six administrative parts connected by a single main road.
The settlement was first mentioned in 1593 when it formed part of the neighboring village of Skawica. It gained separate administrative status during the 1830s through a territorial reorganization.
Wooden houses built in the style of Babiogórcy mountain dwellers line the roads with simple designs and carved details that show traditional craftsmanship. Local celebrations follow the calendar year and feature costumes, music, and customs that visitors can watch and join.
Twelve marked hiking trails lead from the village into the surrounding mountains with routes for beginners and experienced walkers alike. Several ski centers are spread across the settlement and provide direct access to slopes during winter.
Stretching across 18 kilometers (11 miles) of continuous settlement, the village holds the record as the longest in Poland. Despite this length, it remains a single administrative unit divided into six parts.
