Polica, Mountain summit in Zawoja, Poland
Polica is a mountain summit in the Żywiec Beskids of southern Poland, standing at 1,369 meters (4,492 feet) near the town of Zawoja. The peak overlooks the surrounding mountain landscape and lies on a route connecting several marked trails.
The northern slope of this peak witnessed a tragic air disaster in April 1969 when LOT Polish Airlines Flight 165 crashed here. A memorial cross was erected in the 1990s to honor those who lost their lives.
The name Polica comes from local dialects and shows how deeply people connect with their mountains. You can sense this bond when locals speak about the area as you hike.
Several marked hiking trails lead to the summit and remain accessible throughout the year, with starting points near or in Zawoja. The climb is manageable for people with regular hiking experience.
Between 1918 and 1920, this summit served as a natural border point between Poland and Czechoslovakia during territorial changes after World War I. Today few visitors realize this peak once marked an international boundary.
