Sokolica, Mountain summit in Pieniny National Park, Poland
Sokolica is a limestone summit in Pieniny National Park in southern Poland, rising steeply above the Dunajec River gorge. From the top, the view looks straight down to the river winding far below, with forested ridges on both sides.
The name Sokolica means Falcon's Rock in Polish, taken from the peregrine falcons that once nested in the cliff faces. The area was formally protected when Pieniny National Park was established in the 20th century.
This summit draws local hikers and visitors who follow established routes that have shaped daily life in the surrounding valley towns for generations. The peak serves as a reference point and meeting place for communities on both sides of the river gorge.
The summit is reached by marked trails, with Szczawnica being the most common starting point for walkers approaching from the Polish side. Sturdy footwear is essential, as the path becomes steep and rocky close to the top.
Ancient pine trees grow directly out of the limestone rocks at the very top, rooted in narrow crevices where almost no soil exists. Some of these trees are over 500 years old, making them among the oldest in Poland.
