Sokolica, Mountain summit in Pieniny National Park, Poland
Sokolica is a limestone peak in Pieniny National Park that rises 747 meters (2,451 feet) above sea level with steep rock faces dropping 300 meters (984 feet) to the Dunajec River. The formation consists of distinctive limestone cliffs that provide sweeping views of the gorge and surrounding forests from the top.
The mountain received its name, meaning 'Falcons' Rock', from birds of prey that nested in its cliffs during past centuries and shaped local knowledge of the peaks. The area later became established as a destination for climbers and walkers from surrounding valleys.
This summit draws local hikers and visitors who follow established routes that have shaped daily life in the surrounding valley towns for generations. The peak serves as a reference point and meeting place for communities on both sides of the river gorge.
The summit is accessible via multiple marked trails, with the blue route from Szczawnica taking about one hour on foot for those with moderate fitness levels. Alternative paths exist from other starting points, but all routes require proper footwear and care on steep sections.
Ancient pine trees reaching over 500 years old grow directly from the limestone rocks at the summit, forming a rare cluster of these extremely long-lived trees. These trees have developed unusual shapes due to growing in harsh conditions within rock crevices.
