Workplace and House Exhibition, Model housing estate in Wrocław, Poland.
The Workplace and House Exhibition is a residential complex in Wrocław featuring 32 buildings with roughly 130 apartments designed according to 1920s modern principles. The structures display characteristic features such as flat roofs, extensive windows, and thoughtfully organized interior layouts.
The exhibition was organized in 1929 by the German Werkbund association to demonstrate new housing solutions for the shortage of accommodations in industrial cities after World War I. It originated in Germany and later gained international recognition as a model for modern residential construction.
The name refers to an exhibition where craft traditions met modern building methods. Residents lived in spaces designed to test how new ideas about shared facilities and flexible rooms could work in daily life.
The site can be explored on foot, allowing visitors to observe the different house types and their architecture from the exterior. Keep in mind that many buildings remain private residences, so access is limited to viewing the outer facades.
The complex houses the Pancernik student residence, a communal building that demonstrates how shared spaces were meant to encourage social interaction among residents. This experimental living concept was groundbreaking for its time and remains studied by architects as an example of integrated housing.
