Tomaszów Lubelski is an urban municipality in southeastern Poland situated at 280 meters (920 feet) elevation in a landscape of valleys and hills. The town spreads across terrain near the border with Ukraine.
The settlement began in 1590 as Jelitowo and gained town status in 1621, when it was renamed after Tomasz, son of Jan Zamoyski. This change reflected its growth into a regional administrative hub.
