Owl Mountains, Mountain range in Lower Silesian Voivodeship, Poland.

The Owl Mountains form a long ridge in southwestern Poland, rolling through forested valleys and open meadows with several summits breaking above the treeline. Dark conifer woods cover much of the lower slopes, while higher elevations reveal patches of exposed rock and low vegetation that turn green in summer and often hold snow in winter.

During World War II, the mountains contained an extensive underground tunnel system known as Project Riese, constructed under Nazi German administration.

Small villages around Walim and Głuszyca have long drawn walkers who stop at mountain huts and simple lodges scattered along the trails. The rhythm of life here reflects the passing seasons, and families often spend weekends hiking through the forests that climb these slopes.

Most trails begin near small towns like Walim or Mieroszów, winding through dense forest that provides shade and cooler air in summer. Sturdy footwear helps on rocky or uneven paths, especially after rain or during spring snowmelt when ground conditions change.

The name comes from the highest summit Wielka Sowa, whose Polish word means owl and has inspired stories told by villagers for centuries. Old maps from the 19th century show this ridge under different German names before it was renamed in Polish after World War II.
