Municipal Palm House in Gliwice, Palm house in Gliwice, Poland.
The Municipal Palm House in Gliwice is a public greenhouse in the city center, divided into several pavilions each representing a different warm climate zone. Every section holds its own selection of plants and animals, from tropical forest species to those found in wetland or aquatic environments.
The first greenhouses on this site were built in the late 19th century to house botanical collections. In the 1920s they were expanded and unified into a single public facility that has remained open to visitors ever since.
The name comes directly from the palm trees that grow inside and are among the most visible plants in the building. As visitors move through each section, they can see how plants, animals, and water are arranged together to recreate a specific environment.
The pavilions are connected inside, so the full tour can be done without stepping outdoors between sections. A visit works well at any time of year because the tropical areas stay warm regardless of the weather outside.
One pavilion holds a large tank with arapaima, giant freshwater fish from the Amazon basin that are rarely seen in European zoos or greenhouses. They can grow to over 6 feet (2 meters) long, which makes them striking to observe through the glass.
