Gmina Cisna, Administrative division in Lesko County, Poland.
Gmina Cisna is a rural municipality in southeastern Poland, within Lesko County, nestled between the forested hills of the Western Carpathians near the Slovak border. The area consists of several small villages connected by forest roads and river valleys.
The area was settled in the 14th and 15th centuries during the Wallachian migration that shaped many Carpathian regions. After the partitions of Poland in the late 18th century, it fell under Habsburg rule and remained part of Austrian Galicia for over a century.
The villages in this area belong to the Lemko and Boyko cultural traditions, and their influence is still visible in the wooden architecture and local food. Old timber churches from the 18th and 19th centuries still stand in some of the settlements and are open to visitors.
The village of Cisna is the administrative center and offers basic services including a small shop and some accommodation. If you plan to visit the more remote settlements, it is worth preparing in advance since services there are very limited.
Parts of this municipality were nearly emptied of their population after World War II due to forced resettlement operations that moved tens of thousands of people out of the Carpathian borderlands. Many of today's villages were repopulated only decades later, which is why some buildings and local infrastructure look younger than the surroundings suggest.
