Brętowo, Administrative district in Gdańsk, Poland
Brętowo is a district in the western part of Gdańsk, covering areas of dense forest alongside residential neighborhoods. The Strzyża stream runs through its northern section, dividing the area into a wooded part and a built-up part.
The area was first recorded in 1570 under the name Bringenthute and belonged to the Cistercian monks of Oliwa Abbey. A mill and a small settlement later grew up along the Strzyża stream.
The settlements of Matemblewo and Niedźwiednik, both part of the district, have buildings from different eras standing side by side. German and Polish building traditions are visible in the facades and the layout of the streets.
The district is connected to central Gdańsk by public transport and the forested areas are within walking distance from the residential parts. The course of the Strzyża stream is a good reference point when moving through the northern part of the area.
In the 18th century, the area had two copper forges, which was unusual for a rural settlement of its size. These workshops attracted workers and helped the area grow beyond its agricultural role.
