Peace Bridge Wrocław

Peace Bridge is a vehicular bridge crossing the Oder River and linking the northern and southern parts of Wrocław. The structure carries two lanes of traffic in each direction plus dedicated pedestrian crossing spaces between city neighborhoods.

The original bridge at this location, called Lessingbrücke, was destroyed in 1945 during the siege of the city. Professor Jan Kmita designed the replacement, which was built between 1954 and 1959 to restore the connection across the river.

The name Peace Bridge became official in 1966, marking the city's commitment to rebuilding after wartime destruction. It shows how residents embraced the structure as a symbol of moving forward together.

The bridge is open to vehicles and pedestrians during daylight hours and easily connects both riverbanks. Those on foot will find clearly marked areas separated from vehicle traffic for safe crossing.

The structure marks a shift in bridge building: it replaced traditional iron construction with modern 1950s methods. This technical innovation was remarkable for its time and shows the forward-thinking approach of the postwar reconstruction period.
