Saint Nicholas church in Chmiel

Saint Nicholas Church in Chmiel is a wooden Eastern Orthodox church built on a Greek cross plan. The interior is divided into three sections with a central dome supported by an octagonal drum.

The building was constructed in 1906 and served as an ammunition warehouse during World War II. It was restored between 1947 and 1948 after the conflict ended.

The church served the Eastern Orthodox community that lived in this region and needed its own sacred space for worship. Its appearance reflects the craftsmanship of local carpenters who built the wooden structure with distinctive architectural details.

The church sits on a quiet site in Chmiel and is accessible as you move around the area. As a protected monument, visiting access may sometimes be limited, so it helps to check local conditions beforehand.

The roof and dome were converted from shingles to sheet metal in 1977, fundamentally changing the building's appearance. This modernization protected the wooden structure from weathering but significantly altered its historic look.
