Lake Sromowce, Stausee in Polen
Lake Sromowce is a reservoir in the Pieniny Mountains in the Kleinpolnische region and is regulated by an earth dam that backs up the Dunajec River. The water spreads across about 88 hectares and is fed by the Niedziczanka, while a small hydroelectric power plant generates electricity continuously.
The reservoir was created between 1970 and 1994 by building an earth dam on the Dunajec, which was then filled in 1994. This facility was part of a broad strategy to regulate the river and generate energy across the region.
The reservoir is part of the Dunajec water management system and shapes the landscape between the Pieniny Mountains. The still water surface contrasts with the forested slopes and shows how people and nature have worked together in this region for decades.
A road runs across the top of the earth dam and down to the southern shore, connecting Krośnica and Niedzica while offering views of the water and mountains. The lake itself is not used for leisure activities like swimming or boating, as it primarily serves water management purposes.
Under the earth dam runs a steel and concrete wall that prevents water from seeping through the structure and weakening it. This unseen engineering solution shows how carefully the dam was designed.
