Schronisko Sowa, Mountain hut in Wielka Sowa, Poland.
Schronisko Sowa is a mountain hut on the summit of Wielka Sowa in the Owl Mountains of Poland, offering dormitory beds and private rooms for visitors. The wooden building sits at the crossing point of several marked hiking trails and is one of the few places to sleep in this part of the Sudetes.
The hut was founded in the early 1900s under the German name Eulenbaude, when this part of the Sudetes was part of German-ruled Silesia. After World War II, the region changed hands and the shelter became part of the Polish mountain tourism network under its current Polish name.
The hut takes its name from the mountain it sits on, Wielka Sowa, which means "Great Owl" in Polish. This name connects the shelter to the wider Owl Mountains range, and hikers passing through often notice how the local trails and signs echo this theme.
The hut is open throughout the year and serves as a starting point for walks across the Owl Mountains. Booking ahead is a good idea in summer and around winter holidays, when beds fill up quickly.
Mouflon, a type of wild sheep, were introduced to these mountains in the 20th century and now roam the slopes around the hut. Hikers who set out early in the morning or close to sunset have the best chance of spotting them near the open ridges.
