Śluza Cybińska, Historic lock in Berdychowo district, Poznań, Poland
Śluza Cybińska is a historic lock in Poznań featuring two masonry passages designed to control water flow between Cybiński Fort and Warsaw Gate. The structure consists of two chambers built to manage the water levels required by the surrounding fortification system.
The lock was built around 1845 as part of Poznań's fortress system to regulate water levels in military installations. It stands in direct connection with the development of the fortification grounds during the mid-19th century.
The lock represents 19th-century Polish engineering methods and contributes to the understanding of historical water management systems in Central Europe.
The northern passage remains in active use channeling the Cybina River, while concrete tunnels beneath the street limit the exterior view of the structure. The best vantage point for viewing it is from the riverbank areas surrounding the installation.
A modern dam system several meters east of the original lock now creates the largest artificial water reservoir in the city. This layered system from different periods shows how water control evolved over more than a century.
