Kopaliny, mine in Poland
Kopaliny is a former uranium mine in the Kletno region whose underground tunnels stretch for several kilometers. Visitors can walk through an accessible section of the tunnel system, where they see the structure of the mining operations and various minerals such as uranofan and gummite.
The mine had been operating for about 600 years before it was converted to uranium extraction after World War II. In 1948, a Soviet geologist discovered uranium ore in the tunnels, leading to intensive extraction that lasted approximately five years.
The name refers to the minerals that were extracted from this location and shaped the area. Visitors can see today how workers organized the underground spaces and what traces their labor left behind.
Visitors should bring warm clothing since the temperature underground remains constant at about 7 degrees Celsius. Tours last approximately 45 minutes and take place in small groups of up to 25 people, allowing for relaxed exploration with good guidance.
The tunnels still display old markings and tool traces on the walls left by previous miners. These visible details tell the story of daily work and the conditions under which people labored in this underground maze.
