Lublin Underground Route

The Lublin Underground Route is an underground passage beneath the Old Market Square that connects multiple medieval cellars through a network of corridors and chambers. The tunnel system extends about 280 meters and allows visitors to explore these hidden spaces beneath the historic Old Town.

The cellars date from the 16th century when Lublin experienced strong growth and merchants used these spaces to store goods. These underground storage areas were central to the busy trade activity that drove the city during that time.

The route displays miniature models showing how the city changed from the 8th century through medieval times, with details about different building styles in each era.

Visitors should bring warm clothing since the underground passages stay cool year-round, with temperatures ranging from 7 to 12 degrees Celsius. The tours are quite mobile, so comfortable shoes are important for navigating through the tunnel network.

A mechanical model with light and sound effects recreates the Great Fire of 1719, based on a Dominican church painting and historical documents. This recreation allows visitors to experience one of the most important events in the city's history in an engaging way.
