Park Staromiejski w Łodzi, Municipal park in central Łódź, Poland
Park Staromiejski is a green space in the Bałuty-Doły district of Łódź, featuring pathways, a pond, fountains, sculptures, and a solar clock. The grounds are organized into different zones that mix open lawns with shaded areas and small recreational facilities.
The park was laid out in the early 1950s on the site of a Jewish neighborhood that had been demolished during World War II. That neighborhood had sat at the edge of the Litzmannstadt Ghetto, the German-administered ghetto set up in Łódź during the occupation.
The park takes its name from the old town district that once stood here, and several design details quietly nod to the Jewish community that lived in this area before the war. A monument to the Decalogue stands in the park as a direct reference to that history, and visitors can notice it while walking along the main paths.
The park has accessible entrances and public restrooms on the grounds, which makes it easy to visit for most people. There are playgrounds suited to different ages, chess tables, and a skating track that give reasons to come back in different seasons.
The Łódka River runs underground directly beneath the park, and its historical path is marked on the surface through lit elements and water features. A visitor who looks carefully can follow the course of this hidden river just by walking through the park.
