Pomnik Bohaterom Czerwonych Sztandarów

The Red Banners Heroes Monument is a concrete and stone structure featuring figures representing workers and historical elements in the center of Wolności Square. The site includes a commemorative plaque installed in 2006 honoring national liberation.

The monument was created in 1970 by sculptor Augustyn Dyrda as a work of that era. After 1990 it faced pressure to change, but the community ensured its survival by adding new messages to it.

The monument displays inscriptions dedicated to musicians Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain, showing how residents transformed the site into a symbol of artistic freedom. This reimagining reflects how a memorial can gain new meaning when a community adds its own messages to it.

The monument sits next to the Palace of Culture in Dąbrowa Górnicza and is easy to reach on foot. The best time to visit is during daylight when the square is active and the details of the structure and inscriptions are clearly visible.

The monument became a place of community protection in the 1990s when residents prevented its demolition by painting freedom messages on it. This unusual action shows how artworks can gain completely new meanings through public engagement.
