WOP post in Kamieńczyk, Border guard post near Szrenica mountain, Poland
WOP post in Kamieńczyk is a former border guard outpost situated at 1,076 meters (3,530 feet) elevation in the Karkonosze Mountains. The site contains scattered concrete structures that once served as quarters and defensive positions for the troops stationed there.
The outpost was established in 1945 as part of Poland's post-war border defense system along the Polish-Czechoslovak frontier. It played a role in Cold War surveillance efforts during decades of geopolitical tension in this mountain border zone.
The facility received the name of Hungarian poet Sandor Petofi in 1983, representing the connection between Eastern European military installations and cultural figures.
The site remains off-limits to visitors because of environmental protection measures safeguarding the capercaillie population in this region. Hikers should respect the restrictions and observe these regulations while trekking through the surrounding mountains.
Soldiers stationed at this remote mountain outpost grew their own vegetables and raised pigs to sustain themselves. This self-sufficient approach to food was a practical necessity given the isolation and harsh conditions of the alpine location.
