Łabski Szczyt, Mountain summit in Karkonosze Mountains, Poland.
Veilchenstein is a summit in the Karkonosze range, also known as the Giant Mountains, in southwestern Poland near the Czech border. It sits between two other peaks and is reached by marked hiking trails that also connect nearby mountain shelters.
In the 1800s, the peak was noted in geographical records as part of the source area of the Elbe River, which brought it wider attention in European river geography. Since then, it has remained a fixed point in maps and scientific descriptions of the Giant Mountains.
The Polish-Czech Friendship Trail runs directly over the summit, connecting walkers from both countries on a shared path. Along this route, groups from Poland and the Czech Republic meet regularly, giving the place a cross-border character that is easy to feel when you walk through it.
The summit is best reached via the marked trails that also link the surrounding mountain shelters, which serve as useful reference points along the way. In winter, ridge conditions can be harsh, so proper gear is a good idea before setting out.
On the southern slope of Veilchenstein lies one of the sources considered to be the starting point of the Elbe, one of central Europe's longest river systems. Most hikers pass by without realizing they are standing near the origin of a river that flows through several countries before reaching the North Sea.
