Śnieżne Stawki

Śnieżne Stawki consists of multiple small glacial lakes located at approximately 1350 meters (4429 feet) elevation in the Karkonosze Mountains, formed by ancient ice-age processes. The water bodies are surrounded by rocky terrain and sparse alpine vegetation that characterizes this high-mountain environment.

These lakes took shape during the last Ice Age when glaciers carved deep basins into the mountainsides through erosive action. Since that glacial period ended, the water bodies have remained relatively stable landscape features that early explorers used as natural landmarks.

These lakes hold significance for mountain communities who traverse the high peaks seasonally and observe how the landscape transforms with weather changes. Local guides share stories about the terrain with visitors exploring the remote alpine zone.

Marked trails from Karpacz lead to the lakes and require about three hours of hiking through well-maintained paths in the mountains. Starting early in the day helps ensure good daylight for the entire journey, and bringing appropriate gear for rapidly changing alpine weather is essential.

Specialized water plants grow in these lakes and survive in harsh conditions, having adapted to extended periods of freezing temperatures throughout the year. Few visitors realize that these hardy plant species make the lakes scientifically interesting beyond their scenic appeal.
