Cemetery of Agramonte, Cemetery in Cedofeita, Porto, Portugal
The Cimetière de Agramonte, also known as the Cemitério de Agramonte, is a cemetery in the Cedofeita district on the western side of Porto, Portugal. It covers around 12 hectares (30 acres) with well-marked paths, a chapel, and a canopy of magnolias, white cedars, and camellias throughout the grounds.
The cemetery was founded in 1855 and is one of the oldest municipal burial grounds in Porto. Its chapel was built between 1870 and 1874, then expanded in 1906 under architect José Marques da Silva.
The chapel inside the cemetery holds Byzantine-style paintings made by Italian artist Silvestro Silvestri in the early 20th century. These murals are one of the few examples of Italian artistic influence on religious decoration in Porto from that period.
The main entrance is on Largo de Agramonte, and the grounds are easy to walk through thanks to flat, well-marked paths. A public restroom is available near the entrance, and visiting on November 1 or 2 means longer opening hours than usual.
The chapel was first designed by engineer Gustavo Adolfo Gonçalves e Sousa before José Marques da Silva later reworked it, an uncommon case of two different professionals shaping the same building. Marques da Silva is mostly known today for his work on major public buildings in Porto, making his involvement here one of the lesser-known parts of his career.
