Alenquer

Alenquer is a municipality in the Oeste region, west of Lisbon, that spreads across hills and mountains in a rural landscape. The area includes eleven civil parishes and features the Serra de Montejunto ridge as a natural landmark.

The municipality received its charter in 1212 from Infanta Sancha, daughter of King Sancho I, establishing its administrative status. This grant marked the beginning of its development as an independent entity.

The Municipal Museum Hipolito Cabaco preserves archaeological findings, documenting the continuous human presence in this region since prehistoric periods.

The area is best explored by car since villages and fields are spread across the terrain. Proximity to Lisbon makes it accessible for day trips from the capital.

Paleontological excavations uncovered fossils of a 35-ton Apatosaurus from the Jurassic period, revealing the region's prehistoric animal life. These discoveries offer insight into the distant geological epochs that shaped the Iberian Peninsula.
