The municipality of Alenquer spans across 304 square kilometers of hills and mountains, including the Serra de Montejunto within its natural boundaries.
In 1212, Portuguese Infanta Sancha, daughter of King Sancho I, granted Alenquer its municipal charter, establishing its administrative independence.
The Municipal Museum Hipolito Cabaco preserves archaeological findings, documenting the continuous human presence in this region since prehistoric periods.

Paleontological excavations in Alenquer revealed fossils of a 35-ton Apatosaurus Alenquerensis, confirming the presence of dinosaurs during the Jurassic period.
