Nature Park of Alvão, Nature reserve in Vila Real, Portugal
Nature Park of Alvão is a protected area in Vila Real encompassing mountainous terrain that rises from 260 meters to 1,339 meters at Caravelas peak across 72.2 square kilometers. The landscape includes forests, streams, gorges, and several rural settlements nestled throughout the park.
The park was established on June 8, 1983, as a protected area and later received designation as a Natura 2000 site in August 1997 through a Council of Ministers resolution. These legal milestones secured the region's conservation status and management framework.
The mountain villages within the park, such as Ermelo and Lamas de Olo, display traditional stone buildings constructed from local granite and slate that reflect generations of local craftsmanship. This architectural style remains visible throughout these settlements today.
The park is accessible year-round, with visitor centers in Vila Real and Mondim de Basto offering orientation and information about trails and facilities. Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable conditions for walking and exploring the terrain.
The Fisgas waterfalls cascade along the Olo River and create a series of pools across roughly 1,500 meters that visitors can explore on established pathways. This natural formation stands out as one of the park's most memorable features for hikers.
