Castle of Alcoutim, Medieval fortress in Alcoutim, Portugal.

Castelo de Alcoutim is a medieval fortress standing on a hilltop overlooking the Guadiana River, with rectangular stone walls and multiple defensive positions. The castle houses a museum containing artifacts from various historical periods, offering visitors insight into the archaeological layers of the site.

The fortress was captured in the 13th century and subsequently rebuilt under different rulers to improve its defenses. These reconstructions reflect the site's strategic importance across multiple centuries.

The castle museum displays archaeological finds spanning multiple periods, including a collection of Islamic board games from the Moorish occupation era. Visitors can explore these objects and learn about the different peoples who lived at this location across centuries.

The site is well signposted and easily reached from Alcoutim, with adequate parking available nearby. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes as the climb to the hilltop is somewhat steep and exploring the walls takes time.

From the castle, visitors can see a Spanish fortress directly across the river in Sanlúcar del Guadiana on the opposite bank. A pedestrian-only ferry connects the two riverbanks, making it possible to visit both fortifications in a single day.
