Castle of Alcoutim, Medieval fortress in Alcoutim, Portugal.

The stone castle stands on a hill overlooking the Guadiana River, featuring rectangular walls measuring 50 by 40 meters with multiple defensive positions.

Portuguese King Sancho II captured the castle in 1240 during the Reconquest, leading to reconstructions under King Denis I in 1304 and King Manuel between 1495-1521.

The castle museum exhibits archaeological findings from different periods, including a collection of Islamic board games from the Moorish occupation period.

Visitors can reach the castle by following directional signs in Alcoutim, with parking spaces available near the entrance and a small admission fee required.

The fortress faces its Spanish counterpart across the Guadiana River in Sanlúcar del Guadiana, connected by a pedestrian-only ferry service.
