The educational institution occupies two buildings, including a restored palace with neoclassical architecture features and decorative elements from the 18th century.
Founded in 1852 as Liceu de Ponta Delgada, the school emerged from the need to provide public education in the Azores following the Portuguese court's transfer to Brazil.
The school received its name in honor of Azorean poet Antero de Quental and maintains a library with an 18th-century ceiling in the Baron of Fonte Bela Palace.
The institution provides both basic and secondary education under the Regional Secretariat of Education and Culture, serving over 2,000 students in day and evening classes.
The entrance gates of the school mirror the design of the Greek Pantheon in Athens and feature a yellow color scheme representing educational excellence.
