Fajã do Ouvidor

Fajã do Ouvidor is a flat coastal strip on the northern side of São Jorge Island, shaped by volcanic geology. Natural pools collect in the rock formations along the shoreline, creating shallow basins of calm water.

The landscape was created by volcanic eruptions that sent lava flows toward the sea. This geological process happened thousands of years ago and shaped the coast as it appears today.

The harbor here is where local fishermen tend to their boats and nets as part of daily village life. You can observe how people depend on the sea and maintain connections to maritime work passed through families.

The path here is challenging and requires sturdy shoes and plenty of water to drink. Start your journey in good weather and allow plenty of time for the walk without rushing.

A large cave penetrates deep into the coastal cliffs at this location. This cavern is an unexpectedly spacious formation that most visitors discover only when they arrive.
