Ilhéu Mole, Islet off the coast of Madeira, Portugal
Îlot Mole is a small rocky islet off the northwest coast of Madeira, close to Porto Moniz. It has an irregular shape with sharp edges, flat sections, and a lighthouse built on its highest point.
The islet was formed by a Surtseyan eruption, a type of underwater volcanic explosion that happens in shallow water and leaves behind a cone of volcanic rock. Over time, waves wore that cone down into the shape visible today.
The islet cannot be walked on, but it can be seen clearly from the coast near Porto Moniz or from a boat trip in the area. The water around it can be rough, so a calm day gives the best view from the shore.
Despite the islet's small size, the lighthouse on its top is still active and helps ships navigate along the coast of Madeira. Seabirds use the flat rocks as a resting spot, which means the islet serves as a small habitat even though no person can set foot on it.
