Praia do Carvalhido

Praia do Carvalhido is a sandy beach in Povoa de Varzim on the northern Portuguese coast with direct Atlantic Ocean access. The shore stretches across several kilometers with wide expanses of light-colored sand and established swimming conditions.

The site gained attention in the 18th century when Benedictine monks visited regularly to benefit from therapeutic properties of the algae-rich waters and iodine-laden air. These early visits marked the location as a place of health and wellness.

The beach is managed by Banheiros, families with fishing heritage who maintain traditional practices while welcoming modern visitors. Their presence gives the shore an authentic character rooted in generations of local life.

The beach offers sunshade rentals, showers, and free parking nearby for visitors. Water temperatures average around 16 degrees Celsius (61 degrees Fahrenheit), and lifeguard services are available during the summer season.

Shallow tidal pools along the shore form natural aquariums where fish and crustaceans can be observed in their living habitat. Visitors often overlook these small ecosystems even though they sit within easy reach of the waterline.
