The establishment opened on December 28, 1946, as one of only two Lisbon pastry shops manufacturing their products in an underground factory beneath the store.

The pastry shop became a meeting point for artists and intellectuals connected to Surrealism and Neo-Realism movements in Portugal during several decades.

Visitors can access Pastelaria Mexicana through Avenida Guerra Junqueiro 30, near Praça de Londres in the Areeiro district of Lisbon.

The establishment maintains a birdhouse due to a testamentary request from the original land owner, adding an unexpected element to this architectural landmark.
