Fonte Luminosa, Modernist fountain in Alto do Pina, Portugal
Fonte Luminosa is a mid-20th-century fountain in the Areeiro neighborhood of Lisbon, known for its geometric stone basin and water jets arranged around a central axis. It stands at a large roundabout at one end of the Alameda Dom Afonso Henriques, a public promenade lined with gardens.
The fountain was built in 1948 as part of a planned redesign of the Areeiro neighborhood, carried out under the Estado Novo government. The whole district was laid out during this period, and the fountain was intended as a central focal point for the new urban layout.
The tiles at the base of the fountain show scenes from everyday Lisbon life, made in the style of traditional Portuguese azulejo work. This kind of decoration is common in Portugal, and seeing it here, at the foot of a large public fountain, gives it a particularly grounded feel.
The fountain is open at all times and free to visit, and the lighting makes it worth seeing after dark as well as during the day. The metro stations at Areeiro and Alameda are both a short walk away, making it easy to reach from the city center.
The name Fonte Luminosa, meaning "luminous fountain", refers to the lighting system built into the structure, designed to illuminate the water jets in different colors at night. This kind of built-in light display was unusual for a public fountain at the time it was built.
