Meia Praia, Lagos, Beach with sand dunes in Lagos, Portugal
Meia Praia is a beach with sand dunes in Lagos that stretches over several kilometers of white sand. It begins at Lagos Marina and runs toward the Odiáxere River mouth, set along the Algarve coastline.
A protective fort was built between the 17th and 18th centuries on this beach to defend Lagos harbor from sea attacks. This structure was part of the regional coastal defense strategy.
The western section near Lagos draws families and visitors, while the eastern area shows how local fishermen work with the surrounding waters. The mix of tourism and fishing traditions shapes the character of this beach.
The beach has lifeguards from June to September, wheelchair access, and parking areas. Equipment rentals are available, and the facilities are well set up for day visits.
The eastern section contains an active oyster farm in the Ria de Alvor waters, visible to visitors as part of ongoing local seafood production. This traditional aquaculture practice remains an active part of daily coastal life here.
