The building was erected in the 15th century as a parish church and underwent major reconstruction after the devastating 1755 earthquake. Later modifications during the 18th and 19th centuries shaped its current appearance.
The church honors Saint Goncalo, the patron saint of Lagos fishermen since the 15th century. Visitors can see religious statues and artwork that reflect his importance to the local community.
