Ash Shamal, administrative territorial entity of Qatar

Ash Shamal is an administrative region in northwestern Qatar, made up of flat desert landscapes, quiet beaches, and small villages spread throughout. The area is centered around Madinat ash Shamal, a modern town built in the 1970s, with simple streets, parks, and scattered ruins from earlier times.

The name Ash Shamal means 'north' in Arabic, and the region has been home to fishermen and pearl divers for centuries, notably around the old trading town of Zubarah. It grew with Qatar's oil and gas development but remained a quiet part of the country, with archaeological sites showing the bustling past.

The people here have built their lives around the sea, fishing, and trade, keeping traditional crafts and ways of life alive. The old villages and forts show how the community remains connected to nature and its past, seen in local gatherings and the care taken to preserve historic sites.

The best time to visit is in the cooler months from November to December, and always bring sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water. Most places are reachable by car from Doha in about an hour and a half, with an SUV or four-wheel-drive vehicle making it easier to explore the coastal roads.

During the hatching season from April to July, Fuwairit Beach is home to a Hawksbill sea turtle hatchery where visitors can watch the hatchlings emerge early in the morning. This rare experience makes the area special for those interested in wildlife and the region's natural heritage.
