Losail International Circuit, Motorsport racing track in Lusail, Qatar.
Losail International Circuit is a motorsport racing track in Lusail, Qatar, stretching more than five kilometers and illuminated by tall floodlight towers. The course runs through flat terrain and combines long straights with tight hairpins, surrounded by artificial sand berms and runoff areas.
The course opened in the early 2000s as the first racing facility in Qatar and offered a stage for international motorcycle racing from the start. A few years later, the first nighttime event took place, setting new standards for lighting technology in motorsport.
The circuit takes its name from the city of Lusail and sits within a zone that belongs to the larger planned urban area. Large grandstands line the main straights, and on race days spectators from different countries gather to watch the technical spectacle unfold.
The facility is roughly half an hour by car north of the capital and can be reached via paved roads. Visitors should bring light clothing and sun protection, as the surroundings are very open and dry.
The lighting consists of several hundred individual lamps mounted on masts, ensuring even illumination during night races. The asphalt heats up extremely during the day and can still remain hot after sunset, which influences the tire choices made by racing teams.
