Al Rekayat Fort, Historic fort in Ash Shamal, Qatar.
Al Rekayat Fort features a rectangular layout measuring 22 by 38 meters with four defensive towers, three rectangular and one cylindrical, constructed using limestone, mud, and traditional lubnah clay brick mixture.
Built in the 19th century to protect vital water resources, the fort served as part of a defensive network during frequent conflicts among local communities in Qatar's northwestern region.
The fort's name translates to 'wells' in Arabic, reflecting the cultural significance of water management and resource protection in Qatari desert communities during the 19th century.
The site is open Saturday through Thursday from 9am to 5pm and Fridays from 12:30pm to 5pm with free admission, located 94 kilometers northwest of Doha via Al Shamal Road.
During restoration work in 1988, archaeologists discovered an Islamic coin from the Abbasid period dating between 749 and 846 AD within the fort's grounds.
