Ras Laffan Industrial City, human settlement in Qatar
Ras Laffan Industrial City is a large industrial zone on Qatar's northern coast, about 50 miles north of Doha. Built in 1996, it focuses on converting natural gas from the North Field into liquefied natural gas (LNG), producing chemicals, and generating electricity for industrial operations.
The city was established in 1996 as a planned industrial zone to process the North Field, discovered in 1971. The first LNG plant began operations in the late 1990s, transforming the area into the core of Qatar's gas export industry.
This is primarily an industrial zone not designed for typical tourism, so factory grounds have restricted access. The coastal areas include protected natural spaces where visitors can observe wildlife and enjoy quieter environments away from industrial facilities.
The artificial harbor is considered the world's largest and can handle hundreds of ships annually. A shipyard on site is named after a famous Arab pirate and repairs and builds new vessels for the gas export fleet.
