Galați County, Administrative division in eastern Romania.
Galați County lies between the Prut and Siret rivers in eastern Romania, covering territory that includes four cities and 56 communes. Heavy industry shapes the landscape here, with steel mills and shipyards forming the backbone of the local economy and employment.
The county took its present shape in 1968 when Romania reorganized its administrative divisions, bringing together sections of formerly separate regions. This reshaping created the modern structure that exists today.
The area draws its name from an ancient Greek settlement that once thrived here. You can see this past reflected in how locals value their waterfront location between two rivers, which has shaped how communities developed and gathered for centuries.
The region is best explored during warmer months when weather cooperates for travel and outdoor visits. Having your own transport makes it easier to reach museums, nature reserves, and communities spread across the area.
The Băneasa Forest reserve holds wild peonies that grow naturally here alongside paleontological sites containing fossils from different geological ages. This combination of living plants and ancient remains makes the location quite special for both nature and science enthusiasts.
