Timiș River, Carpathian river system between Romania and Serbia
The Timiș River rises in the Semenic Mountains of Romania and flows through the Banat region before joining the Danube in Serbia. It forms part of the border between the two countries along its lower course.
Roman sources recorded this river as Tibiscus, and it served as a key transport route during the Ottoman and Habsburg periods. Trade along its banks helped shape the towns and economy of the Banat region over centuries.
Towns along the river developed their own traditions, shaped by the water and the trade routes it created.
The river passes through very different terrain along its course, so it is worth checking access points for each section before you set out. The summer months and early fall tend to offer more stable water levels and easier conditions for exploring the banks.
Near the mouth of the river stand two inland lighthouses built in 1909 that once guided steamships along the waterway. These rare structures are a reminder of a time when river navigation was a normal part of daily life in the region.
