Castrum Apulum, Roman archaeological site in Alba Iulia, Romania
Castrum Apulum is a Roman military fortress in Alba Iulia with a rectangular layout spread across a large area. The site still shows walls, ditches, and the outlines of various buildings from ancient times.
The fortress was founded around 107-108 AD by the Legio XIII Gemina after Rome conquered Dacia. It served for hundreds of years as a key administrative and military center for the Roman province.
The site reveals how Roman soldiers lived and worked here, with traces of barracks, temples, and workshops scattered across the grounds. Visitors can see how the Romans organized their power through ordered structures and specialized spaces.
The site is located near the modern city of Alba Iulia and is easy to reach, with good paths across the grounds. It helps to wear comfortable shoes and set aside time to explore the different areas.
Remnants of the southern gate can still be seen on the south side of the site, built with original stone blocks. These gate ruins offer rare glimpses into Roman building techniques and construction methods.
